Commonwealth Games has become a custom which is repeated years after years within a gap of five years. In the month of July 2022, the team representing India comprising 106 men and 104 women competing in 16 sports was named.
This year, India is not competing in 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, netball, and rugby sevens.
The Opening Ceremony
72 countries all over the world are delegating more than 5,000 athletes to compete across 280 events at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Renowned hockey player, Manpreet Singh and badminton athlete, P. V. Sindhu also worked as the country’s opening ceremony flag bearers. Squash player, Anahat Singh became the youngest Indian athlete to compete at the Commonwealth Games at just 14 years of age. 45-year-old Lawn Bowls player, Sunil Bahadur has been recognized as the oldest player in the contingent. India’s first medal of the Games is won by Sanket Sargar with a silver in weightlifting. India’s first gold is won by Mirabai Chanu.
During the opening ceremony at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium on Thursday i.e. 28th July 2022, almost exactly 10 years since the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony, the Games will last 11 days as England hosts for the third time in its history. There is an exception existing in it, as not all countries can enter the Commonwealth Games in any of the manners.
