A Fusion Of Tamil Film And Korean Boy Band Rule The Tweets Of 2021

Hashtags are the easiest way to emphasize relevant keywords or phrases in a tweet which also helps categorize millions of similar tweets together. Simply clicking or tapping on a hash-tagged word in a tweet or any other message can redirect one to display the other millions of tweets or other messages with similar words or phrases. Even though Hashtags can now be integrated on almost any platform, one of the first microblogging platforms to utilize them was Twitter.

Twitter celebrates hashtag day on 23rd August every year where it releases a list of the hashtags which were used the most every year. For 2021, the two most used hashtags happened to be #Valimai and #BTS from January 1st to June 30th of 2021. Twitter research indicated that these hashtags were tweeted mostly by fans from Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Karnataka, who dominate this microblogging platform heavily.

The Most Tweeted Hashtags In 2021

Some of the hashtags other than #Valimai and #BTS that made it to the Twitter list of 2021 hashtags are:

  • #covid19 became a part of almost every conversation on Twitter from 2020 till 2021, where the second wave of covid in India was a topic that became a hotspot for many to gain emergency resources in the country.
  • #rubinadilaik was tweeted to celebrate the winner of the Big Boss season 14, Rubina Dilaik, which became the seventh-most tweeted hashtag within 2021.
  • #thalapathy65 was tweeted as the fifth-most tweeted tweet as the Tamil superstar’s (Vijay Hedge) film titled ‘Beast’ gained traction.
  • #Ajithkumar was used frequently for the actor Ajith Kumar who predominantly works in Tamil movies as he was one of the top 5 most tweeted individuals worldwide.
  • #iheartawards was trending as BTS won the ‘the best fan (fandom, ARMY)’, ‘the best music video’ and ‘the best video choreography, Dynamite’ at the iHeart Music Awards.

What is #Valimai?

For context, the hashtag #Valimai is regarding an upcoming thriller action Tamil film which was written and directed by H Vinoth. This film stars Ajith Kumar, Huma Qureshi, Pearle Maaney, and Kartikeya Gummakonda who are some of the well-known stars within the industry. The film was meant to be released on 12th November 2020, but because of the pandemic, the film’s release date got pushed back by almost two years now. The impatience of Valimai fans can be seen very easily on Twitter as they have continued to ask for updates of the movie for about two years now.

  • The Valimai craze

One of the most viral tweets was where one of the film fans was spotted with a placard asking for a Valimai film update in the Euro 2020 Championship Football match between England Vs Denmark semi-finals. Further, the Valimai fans started asking sportsmen and politicians regarding the update of the film to which one of the main film stars in the movie, Ajith Kumar, had to acknowledge them. He made a public statement asking his fans to behave and be more patient. Therefore, the scandal regarding the Valimai film became international and too hard to be missed on Twitter as the already South Indian dominant microblogging platform was flooded with the tweets of the film fans again asking for updates regarding the film in 2021.

What Did BTS Do To Be Tweeted The Most About?

As for BTS, the popular Korean boy band has not left the limelight that it accumulated while going international even on Twitter, as Indian ARMY (the term used to refer to BTS fans) tend to flood Twitter even in 2021. In the pandemic, the boy band’s popularity increased tremendously when they came out with their single ‘Dynamite’, the song became a hit and was even featured on iOS and Android commercials. Later on, with their release of another single ‘Butter’, the band gained immense success, as it also later came out with their special meal collabs with famous brands such as McDonald’s.

With the latest single releases of band members, Jimin and Jungkook, they have broken almost every single record of gaining the fastest tractions and getting tweets about the singles of these two band members worldwide. Jungkook has been the only member from BTS to have over 3 million likes and more than 3 tweets worldwide within a matter of few minutes. Alongside this, Jimin’s latest picture which was captioned as ‘I miss you’, received more than a million likes.

Fans were too puzzled and excited to figure out who the picture was dedicated to, and if there is a mysterious person that ARMY is unaware of. Moreover, because of winning awards this year at several different award shows and breaking records of different countries, BTS’s fanbase has made it impossible not to make any win for the boyband not noticeable.

  • The demographic that made #BTS infamous

Therefore, with the constant hidden messages within their photos and their continuous music production, it is almost impossible for their fans to rest and not display their excitement over the social microblogging platform where writing tweets gets easy recognition and traffic. In conclusion, compiling all that the band had achieved amongst the pandemic and all that it continues to achieve, it is no surprise that BTS became one of the most sensational topics on Twitter to be talked or tweeted about. Since most of the BTS fanbase within India belongs to Gen Z, it is quite obvious to expect the teens to tweet about every activity of the band instantly and enthusiastically.

Conclusion

In both the scenarios, (of Valimai and BTS) the fanbase for them is just too strong to have a battle with on making them both exceptionally trending on Twitter. The irony in both the scenarios is that every other fandom wishes to be as supportive as Thala fans and Army are, while they are also the ones that have received an equal amount of hate as well worldwide. With every positive comes negative, but regardless of all the negative, both the fandoms have shown immense loyalty and support for their film stars and idols.
